In 1983 Man against Horse began by a bar bet on Whiskey Row in Prescott Arizona between Gheral Brownlow and Cowboy Steve Rafters. Gheral bet Steve he could outrun his horse in race.
The "Steel" Cup is our most prestigious award given out to the best conditioned 50 mile horse.

With Gheral Brownlow being a city Counsilman and Steve Rafters working in local law enforcement the race has always been about giving back to the local community. Today we continue honoring their legacy by donating to these two amazing charities.
Bethany’s Gait is a 501(c)3 non-profit ranch in Prescott, Arizona dedicated to “Rescuing Horses, Restoring Lives.” they have programs created specifically for active duty, reserve and veteran military personnel, first responders, and their families.
Yavapai County food bank is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. At Yavapai County Food Bank they have always been about people helping people, making a difference, and bringing the gift of hope to those less fortunate. The are the largest food bank in Yavapai County.
